Big 10 BANboree is proud to present the Awards Gala ceremony!  This award will be given in recognition of Black alums and Pioneers from each Big 10 school who have made a significant and lasting impact. The impact can be at their school and/or in the Big 10, their professional field, providing outstanding service to their university community, exhibiting a significant commitment to their community, or overcoming substantial obstacles in their personal life.

All Black alumni are eligible for this award and it is encouraged that all schools, alumni, alumni representatives and BAN organizations nominate individuals to be considered for the Black Alumni of the Year and Pioneers.  Suggested areas of consideration may include, but are not limited to: 

Excellence in performance

Leadership qualities

Personal accomplishments

Milestones achieved

Nomination eligibility is simple; nominees must have graduated from a Big 10 school and all winners can receive this award only once.  The criteria to nominate people are the following:

  • There are no limitations in the number of nominees each school can have
  • Nominations can be sent to [email protected] and must include the nominee’s name, school, year of graduation and a brief narrative describing the individual’s accomplishments. In the subject line, please put “nomination/Black Alumni of the Year
  • Once nominees have been identified and collected, a slate of nominees will be presented on the website. There, alums will be able to cast one vote for one nominee. Please note that multiple votes will not be allowed
  • Alumni can only vote for their school’s nominees (for example: Maryland alums cannot vote for a Northwestern nominee)


Nominees with the most votes will win and will represent their school as the Black Alumni of the Year!  In the event of a tie, a second voting will be required that will allow only one (1) vote for one (1) nominee.  Winners will be announced at the ceremony on Saturday, July 30 at 7:00pm.  Please note that it will be very important to have each school’s BAN representatives to assist in the development of a brief bio that will be read that showcases each winner’s accomplishments.
